Winter Weather Storm Prep in DFW

Here are a few essential storm prep tips when winter weather is in the forecast for North Texas. Storm preparations in Texas can be different than other cities due to building codes and infrastructure.

Cover Outdoor Faucets: Protect your outdoor faucets from freezing and bursting inside your exterior walls. You can purchase outdoor faucet covers for a few bucks at Home Depot or Lowe’s or even Walmart.

Shut Off Your Sprinkler System: With freezing temps, you don’t want your sprinkler systems to be spraying water on the roads and sidewalks.

Identify Water Shut Off Valves: If a pipe bursts you’ll need to shut off water quickly. Locate your water shut off valves. Some homes have valves in the garage, others have one in the front flower bed, and most have a valve in the street that may use a special tool or key to adjust. Identifying these now is important for every homeowner before inclement weather arrives.

Flashlights And Batteries: Take a few moments ahead of time to locate your flashlights and make sure you have enough batteries.

Charge Your Devices: If your power goes out, it is a real pain to have to go outside and charge devices in your vehicle. So make sure your devices and rechargeable batteries are up to 100%.

Cooking Devices: Fill propane tanks and get charcoal and wood for your other grills or smokers. If the power goes out, let’s make sure you can still cook food and heat liquids!

Vehicles: Don’t forget to fill your gas tanks!

If this was helpful, we’ve also covered how to winterize your home on a budget and also how to plan ahead for extreme weather and some tips for those in weather related emergencies who didn’t plan ahead.
