The Anchor Bar invented what the world knows as “Buffalo Wings” in 1964, and now they’re open in DFW, right by the Cowboys and Rangers stadiums in Arlington, TX.
Wings had been breaded and deep friend in batter in places like Washington, DC and the American South for a long time. There are even records of wings served fried in Buffalo at the Clarendon Hotel as far back as 1857. But the wings we know today, fried without batter with crispy skin, coated in a spicy sauce, and served with bleu cheese? All of that began one night in Buffalo when a bar owner’s son asked her for a late night snack for his friends. That bar owner was Teressa Bellissimo, and the rest is history.
The Arlington location is a sports bar with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and TV’s in every direction. There is a full list of signature cocktails, and a strong beer list, including a Buffalo favorite: Labatt’s Blue.
The Anchor Bar offers many sauces and rubs for their wings. If you want a traditional “Buffalo” wing, order with the “hotter” sauce and bleu cheese on the side. They also offer another Buffalo staple, the “Beef on Weck” sandwich, served with horseradish on the side. My favorite menu item is called “Buffalo’s Best” and features a Beef on Weck sandwich, 5 wings, and a side of fries. There’s also pizza, burgers, other sandwiches and wraps, and a good selection of appetizers and sides on the menu.
Located on E Lamar just off I-30 and Ballpark Way, the Anchor Bar joins a strong list of bars and restaurants near AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, Choctaw Stadium, and Six Flags Over Texas. It is definitely worth a visit!
