The Dallas – Fort Worth Metroplex is currently served by two major airports, and is about to gain a third via an expansion of McKinney National Airport.
Construction is projected to begin in May of 2025 at the airport which is located south of 380 and east of 75, with flights beginning at some point in 2026, despite what appears to be some spirited opposition by McKinney residents.
McKinney National Airport has been around since 1979, and is used primarily by private and corporate aircraft. For over a decade, the City of McKinney has been attempting to expand the airport to include commercial flights, and that’s a controversial topic among residents. In 2015 the voters rejected a bond for the city to buy acreage for the project. In 2018, the city purchased the property anyways. In 2023, voters rejected a $200 million bond to expand the airport for commercial use. In January 2025, the city approved a new site plan for commercial use, with an unfunded $72 million price tag.
Concerns over traffic, noise, and costs seem to be the main arguments flying around social media.
